Happy March and welcome to the 57th issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ February was a particularly healthy month, filled with hikes, running, and surfing. After years of neglect, my diet is now in a great place. Being veggie is going well so far! 🏄🌱 I avoid almost all news, but appreciate that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is an important topic. I have nothing intelligent to add to the discussion, but have included a link to useful resources.

Simple is nearly always better. But if it’s going to be complicated, then make sure the problem is worth the complexity. A great deal of time is wasted creating complex solutions to relatively unimportant problems. - James Clear We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience. - John Doerr More than your salary. More than the size of your house. More than the prestige of your job. Control over doing what you want, when you want to, with the people you want to, is the broadest lifestyle variable that makes people happy. - Morgan Housel

The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness - Morgan Housel
Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behaviour is hard to teach, even to really smart people. In The Psychology of Money, Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money and teaches you how to make better sense of one of life’s most important topics. The hardest financial skill is getting the goalpost to stop moving. Modern capitalism is a pro at two things: generating wealth and generating envy. Perhaps they go hand in hand; wanting to surpass your peers can be the fuel of hard work. But life isn’t any fun without a sense of enough. Happiness, as it’s said, is just results minus expectations. The trick when dealing with failure is arranging your financial life in a way that a bad investment here and a missed financial goal there won’t wipe you out so you can keep playing until the odds fall in your favor.

Not Boring (with Packy McCormick) | Acquired
When does a creator become a company? Who says that media companies — or venture firms — have to be organizations? How high is the ceiling on one person + the internet? Acquired has the answers and they are… Not Boring. 🙂

What to Eat & When to Eat for Longevity | Episode 2 | Lifespan with Dr. David Sinclair
In this episode, Dr. David Sinclair and co-host Matthew LaPlante discuss how frequently we should eat, what food we should avoid, and what food we should pursue. They discuss the science behind how a “low energy state,” which can be induced by a period of fasting, combats aging and promotes health. They also walk through research that points to the benefits of a mostly plant-based diet for slowing aging and offer key insights into when to eat and what to eat to maximize longevity. Some of the eating habits discussed seemed bizarre, but an interesting listen all the same!

Mental Models: The Best Way to Make Intelligent Decisions (~100 Models Explained)
A mental model is a representation of how something works. We cannot keep all of the details of the world in our brains, so we use models to simplify the complex into understandable and organizable chunks. This guide explores 100 models to help you think better, make fewer mistakes, and get better results. My favourite models include:
-
Probabilistic Thinking - Trying to estimate, using math and logic, the likelihood of any specific outcome coming to pass.
-
Inversion - Allows us to flip a problem around and think backward.
-
Hanlon’s Razor - Do not attribute to malice that which can more easily be explained by stupidity.

Rolltop - GOT BAG
I’ve travelled for years with a generic corporate laptop backpack and knew I needed a more practical upgrade. The abundance of options made it challenging to decide, so I outsourced the decision. This bag is awesome:
- Roll-top, so can expand as needed.
- I bring it on planes for free as my “small personal bag”.
- Includes a removeable laptop case.
- Waterproof, and made from ocean plastic.
All credit goes to Marleen for this recommendation!

For the past 20 years I've received a Valentines card from the same secret admirer. So I was pretty upset when I didn't get one this year. First my granny dies and now this.
