Happy November and welcome to the 41st issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ Last month in Barcelona was great. When each day starts with exercising in the sun, swimming in the sea, and tasty outdoor breakfasts anything else that happens that day is a bonus! Highlights included a tour of Camp Nou, a socially distant music gig in a bull ring, and relearning to skateboard. 🏟️🛹 We’re now back in London, just in time for the UK’s lockdown! A dormant Central London is no longer an ideal place to rent, so we’re packing up and handing back the keys to our apartment. London is phenomenal but there are better places to live whilst the world waits for a vaccine. 🌎

‘The only secret is to begin.’ If you want to get good at something or do something, you just do it, and you figure it out along the way. “The vaccine should be tested on politicians first. If they survive, the vaccine is safe. If they don’t, then the country is safe.” - Monika Wiśniewska, Polish Author “Well done is better than well said.” - Benjamin Franklin

Roam Research – A note taking tool for networked thought.
I’ve used this hugely hyped note-taking tool for the past 2 months and have been impressed so far. I now use it daily alongside Notion, in particular for capturing unstructured thoughts. It deviates from traditional hierarchical structured note apps as notes don’t live inside folders or other notes. It also excels at automatically creating linkages between related notes. The learning curve is steep, so I’d advise checking out these video tutorials to understand it’s capabilities.

Traction: How Any Startup Can Achieve Explosive Customer Growth
A brilliant exploration of the 19(!) growth channels available to startups. A must-read for anyone looking to grow a business. Traction and product development are of equal importance and should each get about half of your attention. This is what we call the 50 percent rule: spend 50 percent of your time on product and 50 percent on traction. At any stage in a startup’s life cycle, one traction channel dominates in terms of customer acquisition. That is why we suggest focusing on one at a time, but only after you’ve identified a channel that seems like it could actually work.

The Great Legal Reformation: Notes from the Field
One year after joining the world of LegalTech I still find books and podcasts to be an invaluable source of learning. Mitch Kowalski is a well-renowned leader in this space and in his book he interviews and analyses some of the world’s trailblazing leading legal service providers. The legal profession will be unable to cope with an onslaught of new competitors, many of whom are not lawyers; that the profession’s love affair with precedent, combined with risk aversion and an unwillingness to be a first mover, will form a deadly cocktail for many.

#475: Mr. Money Mustache — Living Beautifully on $25-27K Per Year (Repost) | The Tim Ferriss Show
Mr. Money Mustache — Living Beautifully on $25-27K Per Year Pete Adeney graduated with a degree in computer engineering in the 1990s and worked in various tech companies before retiring at age 30. Pete, his wife, and their now eleven-year-old son live near Boulder, Colorado, and have not had real jobs since 2005. They accomplished this early retirement by optimizing all aspects of their lifestyle for maximal fun at minimal expense, and by using basic index-fund investing. Their average annual expenses total a mere $25-27,000, and they do not feel in want of anything. In 2011, Pete started writing the Mr. Money Mustache blog about his philosophy, which has grown to reach about 23 million different people. This episode explores his story, philosophies, and routines.

Season 1, Episode 1, Capitalist Kibbutz | Foundering
When Adam Neumann dreamed up WeWork, he took inspiration from part of his childhood: his years on a kibbutz in Israel. On stage when discussing WeWork, he waxed poetic about the spirit of community he had found there, and how WeWork was similar, but different – a “kibbutz 2.0.” So reporter Ellen Huet wanted to find out: Was the kibbutz anything like a WeWork? And how did it shape what Adam later built?

Varty - Going out, online.
In last month’s newsletter, I requested that those with interesting projects get in touch. Special shout-out to Jon for linking me in with the team working on Varty. Varty looks to blend the physical and digital worlds, enabling users to host virtual get-togethers and social events. Users can float in and out of conversations, explore different rooms, and connect with people in real-time. The product is in the early stages so the team is very welcoming of all user feedback.
