Happy July, and welcome to the 37th issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ This month’s edition comes a little later in the month than usual. Having recently seen my family for the first time since lockdown started, the newsletter slipped down my priority list! I like to think that the extra week has resulted in even better content! 🏆

Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men
Invisible Women is the story of what happens when we forget to account for half of humanity. It is an exposé of how the gender data gap harms women when life proceeds, more or less as normal. It explores many walks of life, including in urban planning, politics and the workplace. I read this with my book club last month and it opened my eyes to how the default systems in society are often harmful to women. There is no such thing as a woman who doesn’t work. There is only a woman who isn’t paid for her work. Globally, 75% of unpaid work is done by women, who spend between three and six hours per day on it compared to men’s average of thirty minutes to two hours.

The Next Fifty Things that Made the Modern Economy eBook: Harford, Tim (Reading)
I loved the prequel to this book, ‘ 50 Things that Made the Modern Economy’. It explored the unsung inventions which have profoundly affected our modern world and it ranks amongst my favourite books of all time. I have high hopes for this sequel!

The Spreadsheet of Life and Death - Cautionary Tales
Clive had a deadly form of cancer, but fortunately there was a new drug to treat it. Imagine his anger when he was told the treatment was too expensive. He’d entered a world where unique human lives are given a value in a mathematical formula. So how much should we spend to extend or save a life? And are some lives worth more than others?

#444: Hugh Jackman - The Tim Ferriss Show
Hugh Jackman on best decisions, daily routines, the 85% rule, favorite exercises, mind training, and much more. Hugh comes across as one of the most genuine and likeable guests I’ve ever heard on a podcast!

John Collision – Growing the Internet Economy - Invest Like the Best, EP.178

He started Stripe with his brother Patrick when he was just 19 years old, and has grown it to, at last valuation, a $36B business. This conversation covers conglomerates, the internet economy, the power of writing, and why board members are like Pokémon characters, each with different powers.

Diamonds: Articles of Interest #11 - 99% Invisible
Diamonds represent value, in all its multiple meanings: values, as in ethics, and value as in actual price. But what are these rocks actually worth? The ethics and costs of diamond rings have shifted with society, from their artificial scarcity perpetuated by DeBeers to their artificial creation in labs. See the video below for more info on this topic.

My 10,000+ Reading Highlights & Notes
I highlight and add notes whilst reading non-fiction on Kindle. This is awesome for retaining the info I read. I also revisit and review a random selection of these daily in Readwise. Readwise recently released a feature to easily export these in a digestible format.

33 Things I Stole From People Smarter Than Me on the Way to 33 - RyanHoliday.net
I’m a big Ryan Holiday fan. His yearly birthday posts which reflect on his learnings always contain a few great tips. My favourites here include: Competition is for losers.” When people compete, somebody loses. So go where you’re the only one. Do what only you can do.
Well begun is half-done. The less expensive stuff you have, the less there is to worry about.

I first saw this video a few years ago and it blew my mind. 🤯 What you think is a romantic tradition was actually started by The De Beers diamond monopoly. This is a company founded by Cecil Rhodes, known to be a racist, British supremacist and imperialist. For perspective, Hitler was a fan! If you’re ready to learn more I recommend you also listen to the ‘Diamonds: Articles of Interest’ podcast listed above. The world becomes even more interesting when you start to scratch below the surface of many societal norms!
