Happy June, and welcome to the 36th issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ With anti-body tests now available in the UK it’s nice to finally confirm that I did indeed have Covid-19, and that I now have immunity. Exactly what protections this brings are unknown at this stage, but it’s certainly positive news! 🙌💉 I also got out for my first round of golf in about five years. Just as enjoyable, and frustrating as I remember! ⛳

The Complete Life's Little Instruction Book: Brown Jr, H. Jackson (9/10)
1,560 concise reminders to be understanding, thoughtful, responsible, courageous, and appreciative. A short read that is packed full of bite sized wisdom. Some of my favourites include: Truth is serious business. When criticizing others, remember that a little goes a long way. Buy a red umbrella. It’s easier to find among all the black ones, and it adds a little colour to rainy days. Never leave fun to find fun.

The Most Important Thing Illuminated: Uncommon Sense for the Thoughtful Investor: Marks, Howard, Paul Johnson, Greenwald, Bruce (9/10)
I’ve recently started to invest a little. This book explores how to think and deal with the psychological influences that interfere with investment thinking and the mistakes others make in their thinking. It gives a great overview on value and risk. “Investing is a popularity contest, and the most dangerous thing is to buy something at the peak of its popularity. At that point, all favorable facts and opinions are already factored into its price, and no new buyers are left to emerge.”

Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts: Duke, Annie (Reading)
Poker champion turned business consultant Annie Duke teaches how to get comfortable with uncertainty and make better decisions as a result. Decisions are bets on the future, and they aren’t “right” or “wrong” based on whether they turn out well on any particular iteration. Resulting is a routine thinking pattern that bedevils all of us. Drawing an overly tight relationship between results and decision quality affects our decisions every day, potentially with far-reaching, catastrophic consequences.

Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race: Eddo-Lodge, Reni (To read next)
The situation in the US right now is shocking. My exposure has been limited to tragic videos in my Twitter feed, and it’s important I start to educate myself properly. I’ve been told that this book is one of the best places to start.

reCAPTCHA and Duolingo: Luis von Ahn - How I Built This with Guy Raz
In 2000, Luis von Ahn was starting his PhD in computer science when he attended a talk and happened to learn about one of Yahoo’s biggest problems: automated bots were signing up for millions of free Yahoo email accounts, and generating tons of spam. Luis’ idea to solve this problem became CAPTCHA, the squiggly letters we type into a website to prove we’re human. He gave away that idea for free, but years later, that same idea had evolved into a new way to monetize language learning on the web, and became Duolingo. Today, the popular app is valued at $1.5 billion, and is seeing a big spike in growth while people are confined to their homes.

#427: Michael Lewis — Inside the Mind of the Iconic Writer - The Tim Ferriss Show
Michael Lewis is the best-selling author of many books, including Liar’s Poker, Moneyball, The Blind Side and The Big Short. The number of times I pause a podcast to record notes is usually a great proxy for measuring it’s quality. It’s been awhile since I paused a podcast as much as this one!

30 Life Enhancing Learnings
I recently shared my top 30 learnings that have enhanced my life. This was a surprisingly enjoyable exercise and a great chance to reflect. I highly recommend you create your own list! I reference these learnings daily, including: Life is far more random than we appreciate. Chance plays a huge role in determining our life’s trajectory. The delight is in the first bite. Enhance your dining experience by turning every meal into tapas and sharing many plates with others.

Cloudflare - Free SSL certs and protection against website attacks
I used to dread adjusting any hosting settings for my various websites. It turns out my existing hosting provider just had a terrible user interface, and making adjustments is now a breeze in Cloudflare! It’s easy to transfer across your existing domains, you get free SSL certs and also protect your sites against attacks.

Denmark recently restarted their football league season, albeit behind closed doors. AGF Aarhus took a novel approach to bring their fans closer to the action, creating a giant screen, 40 metres long and 3m high, filled with fans watching via Zoom video links! Around 10,000 joined in to watch the match live. Sci-Fi seems ever more realistic these days.
|
Pros: Less queues for beers. Cons: One more Zoom meeting to attend!
