Happy October and welcome to the 26th issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ September maintained the tourist activity frenzy, with punting in Cambridge, the Greenwich comedy festival and the Harry Potter play - a phenomenal production! Check out The Friday Forty for a chance to win great discounted seats each week. 🚣♂️🎭 Today I’m fresh off the plane in Japan to follow Ireland’s quest to win the Rugby World Cup over the next 5 weeks. This trip ticks two priority items off my bucket list - visit Japan and experience a World Cup. Expect next month’s newsletter to have a strong Japanese influence! 🇯🇵🇮🇪🏆

How I Built This with Guy Raz - Headspace: Andy Puddicombe and Rich Pierson
Andy Puddicombe is not your typical entrepreneur – in his early twenties, he gave away everything he owned to train as a Buddhist monk. But after ten years, he decided he wanted to bring the benefits of his meditation techniques to more people. While running a meditation clinic in London, Andy met Rich Pierson, who had burned out on his job at a high-powered London ad agency. Together, they founded Headspace in 2010. Nine years later, Headspace’s guided meditation app has users in 190 countries and an annual revenue of over $100 million.

The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish - #19 The Psychology of Advertising with Rory Sutherland
This info-packed and entertaining interview with Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather, dive deeps on advertising, persuasion, and why humans do some of the silly things we do. This episode is so good I started reading Rory’s book Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don’t Make Sense.

The Daily - An Interview With Andrew Yang, an outsider to be the next US president
Andrew Yang, a former tech executive, remains one of the least known candidates in a Democratic presidential field that includes senators, mayors, a governor and a former vice president. But by focusing on the potential impact of automation on jobs, he has attracted surprisingly loyal and passionate support. I have minimal/no interest in politics but Andrew’s views on the impact of automation and the future of work were very interesting.

There Is No Planet B: A Handbook for the Make or Break Years: Mike Berners-Lee (7/10)
This brought back distant memories of studying sustainability-related textbooks during my Energy Engineering undergraduate! Although it’s a little heavy on stats and graphs, it makes for a sobering read. My main takeaways:
- All attempts to curtail climate change have had a negligible impact on rising global emissions. We must do far more.
- A temperatures rise above 1.5°C may cause irreversible damage. We need to act immediately to prevent this.
- Consume less meat and dairy
- Leave fossil fuels in the ground
- Global co-operation is key. This will be extremely hard as abandoning fossil fuels will create winners and losers

Life is Short
Having kids showed me how to convert a continuous quantity, time, into discrete quantities. You only get 52 weekends with your 2 year old. If Christmas-as-magic lasts from say ages 3 to 10, you only get to watch your child experience it 8 times. And while it’s impossible to say what is a lot or a little of a continuous quantity like time, 8 is not a lot of something. If you had a handful of 8 peanuts, the quantity would definitely seem limited, no matter what your lifespan was. PS - Many of Paul Graham’s essays are awesome…prepare to get lost down this rabbit hole!
