Happy December and welcome to the 28th issue of ‘How Curious!’ ✌️ Last month I eased back into the real world after my travels with a week of family time in Cork. I’ve now kicked off a London based project in a new industry, moving from FinTech to LawTech! ⚖️🚀 I forgot how mentally stimulating it is to drop into a new sector and learn the fundamentals from scratch. Challenging but super fun! It’s a great reminder for me to constantly explore activities with huge potential for learning. 🎓🌟

It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default. - J.K. Rowling Money is like gasoline during a road trip. You don’t want to run out of gas on your trip, but you’re not doing a tour of gas stations. – Tim O’Reilly There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle - Albert Einstein

Icebreaker v0.2 - My Sunday Side-Project
Using Glide (The tool recommended above!), I created a simple app to inspire great conversations! It’s great when drinking with friends, forming new teams and getting beyond any political/weather driven chat! It’s a web app, so no downloads needed. Special kudos to Ian for providing many questions and to those who provided feedback on v0.1. View the product roadmap here.

Reusable Workplace Dashboard Template
Long time readers will know I’m a huge fan of Notion, an all-in-one workspace. It’s made my work 15-25% more enjoyable. I’ve created a work dashboard template that you can duplicate and use for your own purposes.

White Noise Sound Machine for Sleeping
My apartment is close to a busy road, so loud traffic can sometimes make sleeping difficult. This small gadget plays soothing background sounds like rain, waves and campfire. Thankfully this minimises the jarring sounds outside.

You Are What You Read (8/10)
The negativity of the media was the topic of last month’s bookclub. As my old housemates will confirm, I feel strongly about this! The media’s business model promotes the spread of negativity, hate and outrage to maximise engagement and boost their profits. Although I stopped consuming the news almost 5 years ago, this book promotes the consumption of ‘solutions journalism’ rather than a total boycott. I also like this less dramatic approach!

The media influences us to see the world as more troubled than it really is.

Super Thinking: Upgrade Your Reasoning and Make Better Decisions with Mental Models (9/10)
Mental models are decision making tools that guide our perception of the world and our behaviour in it. They help us understand life, make decisions and solve problems. This book gives a great overview of the most common and useful mental models. Building up a collection of mental models makes life drastically easier!

La La Land: Galileo's Warning - Cautionary Tales
Galileo tried to teach us that adding more and more layers to a system intended to avert disaster often makes catastrophe all the more likely to happen. His basic lesson has been ignored in nuclear power plants, financial markets and at the Oscars… all resulting in chaos.

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger – How to Build a Great Product - Invest Like the Best
Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram discuss building awesome products, problem-solving, jobs-to-be-and much more. I’m also a believer in keeping a Someday/Maybe list that they mention.

Collection of the worst volume control UI in the world
A group of bored developers and designers decided to start a thread on reddit to figure out who could come up with the worst volume control interface in the world. This collection had me in stitches! See two examples below:

‘If Facebook were around in the 1930s, it would have allowed Hitler to post 30-second ads’ Listen to Sacha Baron Cohen slam the social media industry for facilitating the spread of hate, lies, and conspiracies through its creation of the ‘greatest propaganda machine in history.’

Social media companies, as publishers, need to do more to stop the spread of lies.
