Book Recommendations
The Little Big things proved to be an inspirational and moving story of how a young rugby star came to terms with a horrific diving accident that left him paralysed from the neck down. This short book gave much food for thought on the value of practising daily gratitude, focusing on what lies within your control and the power of a strong support network to overcome incredible obstacles. (8/10)
Focus on what is in your control and what you can do.
Next on my list is Principles by investor and entrepreneur Ray Dalio. This book comes highly recommended and explores unconventional principles that helped him create unique results in life and business.
The 5 Love Languages - A personality test for love
The 5 love languages is an interesting and popular framework for helping navigate the ever complex world of love. Think of a personality test, but one which focuses exclusively on how we express and feel love!
Understanding the different interpretations of love helps improve our communication and relationships with loved ones.
The 5 languages are:
1) Words of Affirmation: Expressing affection through spoken affection, praise, or appreciation.
2) Acts of Service: Actions, rather than words, are used to show and receive love.
3) Receiving Gifts: Gifting is symbolic of love and affection.
4) Quality Time: Expressing affection with undivided, undistracted attention.
5) Physical Touch: It can be sex or holding hands. With this love language, the speaker feels affection through physical touch.
This blog post covers the topic in more depth and is worth a read on Valentine’s Day of all days!
Hardcore History - Collision of the Old and New worlds
This year I’m exploring key historical events and figures through documentaries & podcasts, especially Dan Carling’s ‘Hardcore History
'Episode 32 - Globalisation unto death’ is a compelling and controversial review of the Age of Exploration, covering the cruelty of white Europeans in their dangerous quest to discover new lands and riches.
